A few months back I found a package of pretty vintage paper doilies at the thrift store and decided to try decoupaging them onto empty wine bottles. I love how my bottles turned out and want to share with you a simple tutorial for making them.
Materials
- paper doilies
- empty bottles or jars
- scissors
- white glue
- paint brush with stiff bristles
- clear acrylic spray
Directions
1. Thoroughly wash and dry your bottle.
2. Cut pieces of doily and lay out your design.
3. Brush a very thin layer of glue onto the back of the doily. Less is better than more. Too much glue will soak into the paper and cause the doily to rip when you try to pick it up. If necessary, thin the glue with a few drops of water to make it easier to spread.
4. Carefully position the doily on the bottle. It's ok if the edges don't adhere completely because they will be glued down in the next step.
5. Brush glue over the top of the doily, using the bristles to gently press it onto the bottle. The paper will stick as it becomes saturated with glue.
6. Allow the glue to dry, then apply a second coat.
7. When completely dry, seal the bottle with one or two coats of clear acrylic spray. The acrylic will provide a water resistent finish, which is particularly important if you intend to use it as a vase. Done!
