A Purple Experiment - Ombré Handkerchief Top

Dip Dyed Ombre Handkerchief Top from

Purple was the color I chose for my entry into the Project Run & Play Season 4 Sew Along Color Week Challenge.  I had wanted to try dip dying for a while and the color challenge was the perfect opportunity to experiment.

I made a handkerchief top from an old white sheet and dyed it for an ombre effect. The top is made from my own pattern and has an invisible zipper closure on the back. I made ruffle capris from a gorgeous purple floral fabric that I found at Hobby Lobby. The capris are also my own pattern, have pockets on the front and some fun jumbo ric rac along the ruffle. I threw a pair of $5 Walmart tennis shoes in the dye bath with the top and made yo-yo flower shoe clips to doll them up.

Out of curiousity, I put some turkey feathers in the dye bath also. I liked how they came out and used them to make the fascinator headband.

  4. That is adorable! I was just checking out an ombre process on the Rit dye site last week! Is that what you used? Thank you so much for sharing with air your laundry Friday! xo Jami

    1. I used Dylon dye and just winged it it. I gradually lowered the garment into the dye bath over a period of 35 minutes. The very lightest part was only in the bath for about a minute.
