It's Week Two at Project Run & Play, and this week's challenge is to design an outfit inspired by a famous or favorite fashion icon. Considering I can only name three fashion designers off the top of my head, I thought about sitting out this week. That is until I discovered an awesome piece of planet and nebula fabric while digging through the remnant bin at Joann's. My inner geek is crushing over the recent trend in galaxy print dresses and skirts, most notably the Brightness Dawn Collection by Setareh Mohtarez. After visiting another store to purchase more fabric, I launched (hee hee) into creating my galaxy bubble dress!

For the pattern, I traced one of my daughter's jumpers as a starting point and then drafted the bubble dress from there. I wanted to add more sparkle to the fabric, so after the pieces were cut out I brushed glitter fabric paint on the nebulae and galaxies.
I liked the cone shape of the inspiration dresses, but did not want to deal with a petticoat. Instead I made the lining from stiff, black denim. As seen in the photos below, it holds the bubble shape surprisingly well.

I also found a pair of iridescent buttons that blend beautifully with the purples and greens in the fabric.

To complete the look, I dyed another pair of nylon tights and fashioned a crown of stars. I started by wrapping a headband with black hem tape and gluing rhinestone stars to it. Next I wrapped the headband with gold floral wire, and finally added some sparkle with silver glitter spray paint.

Miss Juju loves her "Universe Dress" as she calls it! I am trying to convince her to be The Universe for Halloween. Hey, some scientists theorize that the universe is shaped like a donut, so being shaped like a bubble dress is not totally crazy! And in keeping with St. Louis tradition, Daddy will have to teach her some Star Trek jokes to tell for her treats :)
That is such an adorable dress! I wish I was that crafty.

ReplyDeleteI have one question, I'm a fashion designer and I'm looking forwad that strong fabric (not printed) that Setared Mohtarez used in her collection do you know the name? Or the one you used??
I don't know what she used. I used a quilting fabric from JoAnn's
