I love the funny statements and mispronunciations that I hear everyday from my two year old. Whenever she has an itch, she emphatically proclaims, "I scratchy!". So when I thought about what the girls would wear for Thanksgiving, I imagined her sitting miserably on the couch, tugging at a stiff and "scratchy" dress. And I thought, who says that a girl has to wear a dress for a special occasion? Miss Juju already has a gorgeous pair of Laura Ashley corduroy overalls that I bought at the thrift store for $2 (tags still attached and made in Ireland, I'd like to add)! The decision was made and I set out to make a pair of Thanksgiving overalls for Miss Imp.
I created the pattern by combining the bodice of a jumper dress with a pair of roomy pants, adding enough length to the top of the pants to accomodate her torso. I used a vintage floral corduroy that my mom gave to me. She said she bought it before I was born to make herself a skirt, so this stuff is
ancient! I think the mustard yellow flowers and brown vines make this a great fabric for an autumn outfit.
A closeup of the bodice..... I like jumper style bodices for growing kids because you can add an inch or two of length as they grow simply by moving the buttons.
I made gathered patch pockets and placed them so Miss Imp's fingertips would just touch the bottom. She loves pockets, so I made them extra roomy for keeping all of her little treasures.
I added a cute tie on the back of the bodice which also provides adjustment in fit.
The leg openings were a bit wide for my taste, so I gathered the outer sides with elastic.
For the top, I sewed lace to the slightly short sleeves of a shirt she wore last winter.
This outfit is kid tested and approved for lots of rambunctious Thanksgiving fun with her sister and cousins! And it's not "scratchy" at all!
I've added Miss Imp's Thanksgiving overalls to the Project Run & Play
sew-along flickr pool for this week's Holiday Wear challenge. Stop by and check out all the gorgeous and creative holiday outfits!
What a cute idea for a Thanksgiving outfit. You really make me want to learn how to sew.

This is a great idea for a holiday. I totally agree why should little girls be stuck in scratchy dresses! How great you had this fabric, I think it certainly found a great home after a long wait.
