My front door has been bare for several months now. It was a very sad situation caused by a major case of crafter's block. My door cried out for something colorful and summery, but the thought of another flowery wreath just didn't excite me. A couple days ago I FINALLY broke through. After discovering and falling in love with all of the pallet wood American flags on Pinterest, I decided to recreate the look using wood shims.
The stripes of the flag were created from individual wood shims painted with either red acrylic or a white wood stain and held together by wood supports glued to the back. To make the supports, I glued two wood shims together in opposite directions. I used a weather resistant wood glue because the flag will be exposed to harsh sunlight and rain.
I inserted an eye screw in the top of each support for hanging...
... and glued a blue painted starfish in the upper left corner.
Here it is, just in time for the 4th of July! It's not your typical American flag decor, but patriotic and summery nonetheless.
In the mood for a little more red, white and blue? Check out these free patriotic printables from last summer.
I adore this flag! Pinned.

You always have the most adorable printables. Love that patriotic wood shim front door decor. I am glad you finally listened to that door screaming for something to have adorned upon it :)
ReplyDeleteI just made this!! Thank you! It is so cute!! May I ask what type of glue you used to glue the starfish to the wood. I used wood glue but am nervous it will not hold it. Thanks!
ReplyDeleteAwesome Brittney! I used Titebond II weatherproof premium wood glue. My flag has been through plenty of wind and rain, and the starfish is still sticking :)

This is totally awesome! And I just bought a package of the large shims yesterday, not even sure what I wanted to do with them. Now I know. Thanks so much for sharing!! Question: where did you find that cute starfish?
ReplyDeleteThank you Patti! I got the starfish at Hobby Lobby and painted it blue myself.
